Welcome to the Winter edition of "Paw Prints," our quarterly newsletter. We're excited about this newsletter because it's a special edition to capture our year end successful rescues and adoptions of 2009.
Dakota Rescue touched many lives in 2009, thanks to the generosity and support of true animal lovers and caring friends. For the year of 2009, together we rescued nearly 72 furry friends – many of which were facing lives of deprivation and suffering from malnutrition, injuries, parasites and disease. Our rescued animals were cared for, fed and comforted; their wounds were stitched, injuries healed, and from the start of our organization in April 2008 until now, we are proud to say that 140 rescues have been placed in homes where they will receive a lifetime of love. As we reflect on these heartwarming stories and the amazing progress we made in 2009, our success is bittersweet, knowing that so many more are suffering, in need of food, shelter, medical assistance and simple human kindness. We look forward to continuing our efforts in 2010 and reaching out to more caring friends to help us meet the need. From the entire Dakota Rescue team, we thank each and every one of you for your support and wish you a Happy New Year! Out of the dozens of successful adoptions in our first year, below are a few stories of furry friends that warmed our hearts.
As always, we thank all of the volunteers and contributors for making our rescues, adoptions and other services possible. If you would like to join our family of animal advocates, please visit our Dakota Rescue Web site to learn more about how you can help.

Dakota Rescue, Rex |
Rex
There were many phenomenal rescues, but Rex definitely was one of the most heartbreaking stories of 2009.
Meet Rex - His story is unbelievable. He was found tied up to a fire hydrant when he was spotted thankfully by a vet. She stopped and examined him, upon her examination she was pretty sure he had a broken leg. Took him back to her office and did x-rays. Sure enough he had a broken leg, was hungry and dehydrated. Fortunately his break was a clean break so he will heal nicely. Considering everything that he has been through he has a VERY loving and affectionate personality. He moves around really well even though he has a full cast on his leg. He is a Corgi mix, up to date on all shots and neutered. Weighs between 35 - 40 lbs, approximately 2 years old, housebroken and is a very good inside dog. Rex is in a wonderful foster home and they are giving him the love and affection that he deserves. Although he still wants and needs his forever home.
In addition to Rex there are so many stories like this. Please take a moment to look at our current rescues that we hope to place in forever homes in 2010. Rescues of 2009. |

Dakota Rescue, Lombardy |
Lombardy
Our Lombardy truly came from the streets, a homeless stray. He was living on the streets close to a year. Because of his skittish personality it took a long time to approach him. But he was always hungry and that is how the relationship started. It took many months of trusting, but he finally became more approachable. As time went on he was finally caught and taken into the vet. As many of our street dogs are, he was heartworm positive, although was treated. He is a hound mix, maybe some lab. He is approximately 2 years old, healthy teeth and has beautiful gold eyes. He eventually became more relaxed as he was around humans more and more and surprisingly he is great on a leash. He gets along great with other dogs, he never has had an aggressive personality and is showing even more of his sweet side each day. Fortunately after a long life on the streets he finally found his new family. Lombardy now lives in a safe and loving home along with a sister cat. Lombardy was definitely one of our favorite adoptions of 2009. |
Dakota Rescue, Chance and Family cat |
Chance (Chancey)
We are so pleased about Chance, he is definitely a rags to riches story.
He was found roaming the streets near downtown Houston, obviously homeless, no collar or tags. When this little guy was found, he had a torn lip and had been bleeding for a couple of days. Our rescue group took him into the vet, we were thrilled to have gotten a sponsor. He recovered from jaw surgery and turned out to be this vibrant beagle hound mix. After being fully treated, this little guy had the biggest spirit, very happy and quite the comedian. It took a little while but when his new family discovered him by his flyer and then came to our website and viewed his YouTube video, they knew Chance was the rescue for him. He now lives in a safe and loving home. He doesn't have to roam the streets anymore. Also, unknown to us, he had no issues with the family cat. As you can see they make quite the pair. |
Dakota Rescue, Bingo |
Bingo
Bingo's adoption was one of our biggest successes for 2009. He had been in the program for over a year. This poor guy waited a very very long time for his family to come, but we did not give up hope, we knew he would find his home. The family that adopted him, understood his needs. Bingo lived in a boarding facility for over a year, but his perfect family finally found him. He gets to go for very long runs with his new mom and dad and they have given him his own bed and he and his dad enjoy snoozing on the sofa together. We could never be more happier for Bingo and his new family.

Dakota Rescue, Trixie |
Trixie
Trixie the ultimate sweetheart, who does not have a mean bone in her body, was a neglected rat terrier mama that was found with her pups in 100 degree weather living under a house in dirt and filthy conditions. When taken to the vet we were told that they had a bacteria fungus that was basically related to being left in these conditions. Needless to say pups and mama had a huge recovery but we are happy to report the pups survived and found homes. Even Trixie was placed in a loving home safe home and no longer will live in those bad conditions.
We are so proud of all of the rescues that were placed in 2009, please take a look at our adopted rescues of 2009. |

| Top Ten 2010 New Year's Resolutions for Pets |

1. I will take my pet to a veterinarian for a yearly examination. Maintaining their health will not only save me money in the long run, but my pet will live a longer and happier life as well.
2. I most certainly will keep my pet’s vaccinations up-to-date. A lot of ailments can be avoided and my pet deserves to be treated with the resources available today.
3. I will not feed my pet people food. Their digestive system is not meant to handle it and they will become “lurkers” around my kitchen and dining room table.
4. Feeding my pets good quality food in appropriately designated amounts will keep them healthy. They like routine feeding times and habits and will come to count on my discipline.
5. I will take my pets to training classes and use the techniques suggested so that they are well behaved animals. They will come to know what’s expected from them and this will make my life and theirs less chaotic.
|
6. I will keep my pet thoroughly groomed which includes brushing, clipping, or whatever else is necessary to keep them and my household more comfortable. This will reduce the amount of dander and hair that lingers, and keep longer haired animals cooler in the summer.
7. I will not ignore my pets. They need exercise just as much as I do. Keeping them locked up in a postage stamp sized backyard is not daily exercise.
8. I will be consistent when relating to my pet what is expected of them concerning their behavior with appropriate awards and punishment. I will not harm my animals when they misbehave, but rather my tone of voice will inform them of wrong doings.
9. I will say no to exotic pets and animals, they’re called wildlife for a reason.
10. I will take care to remove all dangerous objects, hazards, and chemicals from within the reach of my animal in my home. I might even keep a pet first aid kit handy in case they get hurt.
Bonus: I will love my pet! After all it is I who decided to have them in the first place and they depend upon me for their well being.

One of our favorite videos was from an artist, singer and obvious dog lover named Wendy Francisco. It will without a doubt touch your heart and give you some real meaning of what life is about with you and your canine mutt. When you are having one of those rough days, take a listen to this special music video...God and Dog. |
| Amazing Animal Stories for 2009 |
 |
We like to include an amazing story in each newsletter but this definitely was one of the most interesting stories we discovered in 2009. This is not a snopes, this ia a true story. The story of a lion's tale and his owners that had to eventually set him free. This happen many years ago, but the story has since became one of You Tube's largest watched video, please read more on this touching reunion with Cristian's and his owners' story.
